He's equally at home chicken pickin' country or re-creating the sound of a roller coaster with his guitar.Ĭompositionally speaking, many of his tunes are initially conceived to be soundtracks for rides at his imaginary theme-park-Bucketheadland. Heavy Metal and Funk styles figure formidably in the mix, but he's not limited to the cliches of either genre. His music is very difficult to categorize because each release tends to have its own flavor and context. Lord of the Harvest (1994 Black Arc/Rykodisc)īuckethead's musical stylings range from raw-power riffing and hyper-speed metal licks to idyllic, yet edgy chordal passages and heartrending melodic lines. Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) (1992 Axiom) Monsters and Robots (1999 Cyber Octave/Higher Octave Music/Virgin) His dream is to complete his own park-Bucketheadland, "Where all your dreams and nightmares can come true." This theme runs through many of his recordings and was first introduced to the public through his Psychobuddy columns in Guitar Player magazine back in 1991 He draws inspiration from science-fiction and horror movies, musicians, artists, writers, athletes and has bizarre fixation on Disneyland. He would prefer that his fans accept his eccentricities, focus on his art and enjoy the wonderland of joy that is Bucketheadland.

The mask and bucket add an eerie air of mystery to his activities and serve as a harbinger for his otherworldly musical stylings and sensibilities. He doesn't grant many interviews, and shuns most conventional means of contact. And possibly due to the unusual circumstances surrounding his upbringing, he is a very private person. We do know that he was raised in a chicken coop by chickens. There has been much speculation as to the identity of Buckethead. He has since released several solo albums (under his name and Death Cube K) and participated in many group settings (most notably the Deli Creeps, Praxis, Zillatron, Giant Robot, Giant Robot 2 and Cobra Strike) and performed/recorded numerous collaborations with other adventurous musicians and artists. His major label debut as a member of the avant-funk outfit Praxis in 1992 opened ears and minds to his unique character and musical stylings.

Above average but not excellent either.Buckethead is the masked, inverted KFC bucket wearing, "mutant guitar virtuoso" that stunned audiences during Primus's set at OzzFest '99, toured the world with Praxis and GR2, and graced many a movie soundtrack/score. Overall not an outstanding PIKE but decent enough to call good. Probably one of the heaviest tracks from BH in a while. This one is a lot more interesting than the opener as it has different ways of mixing up the riffing sessions up with varying intensity. This one sustains pretty much the same chord progressions but changes the riffs up with alternating softer passages and the grungy faster ones. "Growing Gills" is a bit feistier with heftier guitar distortion and a faster tempo. While competent and not offensive to the ears, unfortunately this is like the gazillionth rendition of the same basic formula that takes a recurring theme and spirals out to an unnecessary playing time. As with many of the more recent PIKEs of the same ilk, this one has an atmospheric backdrop that sort of steers the chord progressions as it drops in and out of the soundscape. The sprawling title track is a one of those common alt metal tracks with all instrumental guitar riffing sessions accompanied by thumping bass and drums. The opening title track swallows most of the playing time with over 21 minutes leaving the second "Growing Gills" at just shy of 8 minutes. BUCKETHEAD's third release of 2022 is PIKE 305- TWO STORY HOURGLASS and features only two tracks that barely race past the 29-minute mark.
